Happy Ever After
Happy Ever After
12 July 2003

“The shoe fit and the prince realised Cinderella was the princess from the ball. Despite her step-sister's protests the Prince and Cinderella were married and lived happily ever after.” Paul shut the book and glanced down to the sleeping child in his arms. Julian had stayed awake for most of the tale but had dozed off before the end. It was probably for the best anyway. They’d read the tale together many times before and Julian would always inevitably ask, “What does ‘happily ever after’ mean?” And Paul could never answer him.
He set the book on the nightstand and lifted Julian up in his arms, carrying the boy to the bed in the hotel room. John and Cynthia were still out, most likely not together, and he had once again felt obligated to watch Julian. It wasn’t obligation, really. It was just the right thing to do.
He tucked the boy in, kissed his brow lightly, and slipped out into the adjoining room he was sharing with George. “Lad asleep?” George asked quietly as Paul shut the door. Paul nodded wearily.
“He needs a real father,” he sighed curling into bed beside him. “We’ll have a happy ever after, won’t we?”
George pulled Paul into his arms, kissed the top of his head, and smoothed his hair down. “Everything happens the way it does for a reason. Have faith.”
Paul closed his eyes; he was not reassured and thought he knew how Julian felt after the fairytale had ended.

That was brilliant. Loved it. Kind of made me a little sad, though.

But not all fabbles are supposed to be happy and dandy with pink bunny rabbits anyway. So it's still brilliant.

Yes, yes. Thank you, you got it. Not everything ends happily ever after. Thank you.

I love this; it is definitely one of my favourite fabbles. I also agree with what has already been said, and I am glad that someone has written something that doesn't (or may not) end happily.

You flatter me, thank you. I'm glad you liked it and understood it. There's is not a happy tale, I don't think.

Hey George,

This was so endearing! It's nice to see the fatherly side of Paul...actually, of any of the Beatles! lol.George and Paul seem so sweet together, longing for a love to make them happily ever after. *sigh* great fabble!

Oh Sam *sighs* that was sweet. Paul always loved Julian and took care of him alot over the years. Even after John died , Paul still watches out for Julian. I loved Paul asking George about happily ever after and George saying there is a reason for everything. I truely believe in that one. Nice story

Yes, Paul was a dear to Julian. It's a good story, you can take what you want from it, I guess.

Glad you like it, thank you. :)

So bittersweet, and like others have said, the not ending happily is plausible and realistic.

Beautiful work.

Now to find time to read your long story!

Thank you. I'm glad you feel that way too and got it. You're very flattering.

I hope you enjoy my longer stories as well. :)
