A something. John/Paul, cute and cuddly and sad.

John stood in the middle of the street outside the hotel, barefooted, allowing the rain to doggedly drench him. Rain trickled down his back, under his shirt. The bottoms of his jeans were soaked to the knee. His hair was sodden and stuck to his forehead and the back of his neck in pointed little tendrils. John simply stood, staring at nothing.

His mates were all upstairs, somewhere around the seventh floor, safe and warm and dry in their rooms. Worrying about him.

“John!” That was Brian. John didn’t move.

Later, “John!” George. John glanced up but didn’t respond, and looked back down.

Still later, and softer, “Johnny.” Paul. That one was worth responding to. John lifted his head to look up at Paul, whose own head, stuck out the window was getting quite damp as well. John simply gazed upwards, confident that the rain would cover his tears.

“Johnny,” Paul called again, sadly. His voice was just left of a whisper, but John heard him perfectly. He made no response, simply continued watching Paul. “Come inside…please?” Paul beseeched. John didn’t move. “Johnny, you’re breaking my heart, please, come in and warm up. It’s your birthday! We have cake and presents and everything, too. Please?”

Still garnering no response, Paul sighed, and, grabbing a blanket off of one of the beds, headed downstairs. He left the warm building behind and approached John. He wrapped his arms around the older man, enveloping him in the blanket as he did so. John resisted for a moment and then, with a strangled sob, leaned into Paul, burying his head in the bassist’s shoulder.

Paul held John close, making soothing noises. “Shh, it’s okay, Johnny, I know, I know. But listen, John, love, your mum wouldn’t want you to be so sad on your birthday.”

John pulled his head up sharply to look at Paul. “How…” he began.

“Shhh,” Paul whispered, pulling John close again. “You don’t think I miss my mum on my birthday, too? I know what it’s like. Missing the cakes she baked, and missing her singing ‘Happy Birthday,’ and everything.”

John remained silent, clinging to Paul, seeming for all the world like a lost little boy.

“But Johnny,” Paul said gently, “she wants you to be happy! She doesn’t want you to be freezing out here, and neither do I. Because she loves you.” He paused for a moment. “And so do I.”
